IPVanish Windows 8 Update

As a Windows 8 user we were happy to see the latest IPVanish Windows client 1.2.4.1 release.  In the latest version of their free VPN software, IPVanish added OpenVPN support for Windows 8.  Previously you could connect via PPTP and L2TP but OpenVPN was not available.  Now you have the option to make use of OpenVPN (TCP or UDP) in the client.  The process is very simple and we’ll show you just how easy it is in a moment.

First you’ll want to grab the latest IPVanish version 1.2.4.1 client.  New users can download it free from the IPVanish site.  While current members will receive a message to upgrade the next time you open the software.  Don’t see it?  Then click on SupportAbout IPVanish and confirm you’re running version 1.2.4.1 of the client.

IPVanish Windows 8 - Enable OpenVPN

You will notice that OpenVPN still isn’t presented as an option when the software launches.  That’s alright since you can easily enable OpenVPN and have it available every time thereafter.  To enable OpenVPN simply click Preferences.  The screen is shown above.  Then click the checkbox next to Windows 8: Enable OpenVPN.  Then click OK.  Now OpenVPN is an option along with PPTP and L2TP connections.

Now you’re ready to take full advantage of IPVanish on your Windows 8 system.  You’ll notice two OpenVPN options as shown below.  One for OpenVPN (TCP) and another for OpenVPN (UDP) connections.

Without spending too long on the technical details you have the option between TCP and UDP for OpenVPN connections.  UDP is faster and a good solution for gamers.  While TCP includes some error checking.  So if speed isn’t your top priority then you might prefer TCP.  We personally use UDP a majority of the time.

You may have noticed some other options in our first screenshot.  Including the option to have IPVanish save your login credentials, start the client when Windows starts and connect automatically when the software launches.  You can make these selections based on your preferences.  Regardless we suggest you check Auto-Reconnect on the main IPVanish screen anytime you use the service.  That way if you have any lapse in connection the client will take care of reconnecting and provide that extra layer of protection.

Read our IPVanish review if you’d like to learn more about the service.  It is one of our favorites and the recipient of our Editor’s Choice Award for the fastest VPN service.  You’ll enjoy their wide selection of VPN servers around the world.  With the option of two simultaneous connections and unlimited VPN access for just $10 a month or $99 a year.  Along with a 7 day money back guarantee.  Give IPVanish a try and let us know what you think.
