CactusVPN Mac Client Review

Earlier this month CactusVPN shared some exciting news with us.  After a lot of hard work their team has released a Mac version of their VPN client software.   The Mac OS/X version includes advanced features including app killer.  Helping users ensure their apps don’t communicate if the VPN drops connection.  Members can download the client for free while new users can sign up from just $4.99 a month.

We’ve tested and use CactusVPN’s Windows software.  The similarities in the Mac client are obvious.  Letting users easily switch between systems and enjoy the same features and benefits.  Connect to their servers in the United States, United Kingdom or the Netherlands.  Your server access is dependent on which VPN plan you subscribe to during the sign up process.  Let’s take a closer look at the main user interface.

CactusVPN user interface

We like the clean interface design that CactusVPN was able to present.  It’s very easy to follow.  First you choose a country (US, UK or NL).  From there you can select a specific server location.  The next step is to choose a VPN protocol.  We highly recommend OpenVPN for the most secure connection.  PPTP and L2TP protocols are also available.  After you’ve selected the server and protocol simply click Connect to enable the secure tunnel.

Next we’ll take a look at the settings tab:

CactusVPN Mac client settings

The settings page presents you with a number of options.  The startup settings will let you set the behavior of the client when you start your system.  You can have the CactusVPN software run at startup and login.  With the option to minimize when started or once connected.  The reconnect settings are important.  This is where you tell the client what to do if the connection drops.  We suggest you turn this on to help protect your privacy.

The final settings tab let’s you configure app killer:

This is where you protect apps from communicating if your connection drops.  First you’ll want to add an app to the list.  Then check the box to restart on reconnect.  If your connection drops the app will automatically close.  Then it will restart once a connection is reestablished.  You can protect multiple programs.

That’s all there is to it.  Visit Cactusvpn.com for more details and to download the new Mac client.
