ExpressVPN Custom Router App

This has to be one of the best additions we’ve seen in a long time.  ExpressVPN recently rolled out a new router app.  Customers can use firmware files provided by ExpressVPN to configure three popular Linksys router models with DD-WRT to protect your entire network with their VPN.  In the past members had to rely on a third party supplier like FlashRouters (still a great source) or attempt to flash their own router.  While you still need to flash the router, ExpressVPN is providing the firmware file along with instructions.  All you need to get started is an ExpressVPN account.  Once signed up you can configure your Linksys router to connect to the service.

Running DD-WRT gives you more features and better performance.  While encryption adds overhead, you can expect faster VPN across all the devices on your network when using DD-WRT versus the factory Linksys firmware.  ExpressVPN gives you three options to get started.  The easiest method is to order a pre-configured device from FlashRouters.  This is a hands off approach.  You order the device and it comes ready for action.  We’ve had the opportunity to test devices from FlashRouters over the years and stay in touch with their team.  If you don’t mind spending more to have the router configured for you, then this is the way to go.

The second option is to purchase a router and flash it with a DD-WRT firmware file provided by ExpressVPN.  You can visit their router page for a list of supported models.  At the time of this post, they are supporting the following routers:

  • Linksys WRT1200AC
  • Linksys WRT1900AC
  • Linksys WRT1900ACS

The routers range from $149 to $199 on Amazon.  I would recommend spending the extra $50 and going with the Linksys WRT1900ACS model for the best range and performance.  If you plan to connect to ExpressVPN (and that’s the point right) then you want the most powerful router.

ExpressVPN lists a final option for tech savvy users.  You can configure your Asus, D-Link, Netduma, Sabai, or TP-Link router to connect to their network.  This is for those users who have a technical background.  Even ExpressVPN shows this as being difficult.  If you are thinking about configuring your own device then I suggest you visit ExpressVPN and follow up with any questions.  It’s too easy to brick a router so I suggest buying a router through FlashRouters or getting one of the supported routers from Amazon.

Regardless of whether you purchase a pre-configured router or flash your own with ExpressVPN firmware, the result is the same.  You can encrypt the traffic for every device that runs through the router.  Even if it doesn’t natively support VPN.  This is a great solution.  Visit ExpressVPN for more details and to get started.

PureVPN Introduces New Client Features

The PureVPN team has been hard at work adding new features to all of their VPN client apps.  Over the last few weeks they have released new versions of their custom VPN client software for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.  In a moment we’ll introduce you to some of the latest features.  We encourage everyone that’s already using PureVPN to upgrade to the latest apps.  If you haven’t had a chance to try the service lately, PureVPN is currently running a promotion.  You can sign up for a full year of unlimited VPN from just $4.99 a month.

The image above shows the new PureVPN iOS app in action.  As you can see, the app has a great looking user interface.  The image on the homescreen will change based on the server location you connect to.  Even better are the new features in the iOS app.  For starters you have access to split tunneling via the new On Demand VPN feature.  Select whether a URL is sent through the VPN or your ISP.  The new app also supports dedicated IP.  Members that have purchased the dedicated IP option will now have access with iOS.  As with all the new releases, the iOS app supports multiple languages.  You will notice one more new feature.  As shown above, you can select a mode in the latest iOS release.  This will help you find the right server and encryption level.

The PureVPN Android app has the same fresh new user interface.  You can select between languages including English, French, German, and Dutch.  The new Auto-Redial feature will help you reconnect to the service.  The feature is very helpful in that it will automatically reconnect right away if the VPN happens to drop.  You won’t have to look and see if you’re connected or go back into the app to reconnect.  Android users can use the new split tunneling feature to decide which traffic will flow through the VPN versus your ISP.  This gives you even more control.  The new app is available to download on the Google Play store.

Netflix Forces Users to Choose Between Privacy and Entertainment

May 27, 2016 update: the OpenMedia campaign has nearly 50,000 signatures now.  In an effort to draw attention to the cause and hopefully a reaction from Netflix, OpenMedia is driving around Silicon Valley with this message:

In an attempt to discourage users from streaming content in other countries, Netflix has taken a hard stance on the usage of VPN.  Over the weekend they went a step further and are now blocking most VPN users from reaching the service.  We can debate whether or not it’s acceptable to switch Netflix locations.  That’s a business decision that has been made.  The biggest issue is the collateral damage.  The approach Netflix is taking puts them on the wrong side of user privacy.  The problem is that you can’t access the service when connected to a VPN in your own country.  In doing so Netflix is forcing users to choose between privacy and entertainment.  That’s not acceptable under any circumstance and users are starting to voice their opinion.  OpenMedia has launched a “My Netflix My Privacy” campaign to help give users a voice.

I encourage all Netflix users to sign the petition.  This will give the OpenMedia team the power necessary to take the message directly to Netflix.  Anyone who remembers Flixter knows that Netflix is not beyond changing course if enough users voice opposition to their strategy.  Regardless of whether or not Netflix chooses to block users from switching regions, the company needs to keep user’s privacy in mind.  There has to be a better solution than their current approach of blocking VPNs outright.  Perhaps Netflix could compare the billing address with the country you are connecting from.  If the two match then don’t block access, even if the IP address is known to belong to a VPN service.  If enough users voice their criticism then Netflix will be more likely to change course.

The use of encryption to help protect your online privacy is growing in importance every day.  As a long time Netflix customer I will be cancelling my account until I can use a VPN from my home country to access the service.  There are plenty of other entertainment options available.  I won’t trade my privacy for a few laughs and I encourage you not to either.  Let Netflix know that you stand behind the need for privacy by signing the My Netflix My Privacy petition and sharing the issue with others so their voice can be heard as well.

New Windows and Mac Apps for OverPlay
